Soccer Drills: Variations of a passing drill from Guus Hiddink
.01 Basic Drill
Setup: 8 – 10 players, 1 ball, 6 cones, field 10m x 20m
Sequence:
- A1 passes to M1 (1), who passes into the run of A2.
- A2 plays a through pass to M2 and runs to the other side.
- M2 passes into the run of A1 and prepares for the first pass from the other side.
- Like in the game players should pay attention to (open body position, correct position for passing).
- A1 runs to the other side. The same sequence back.
Tips and suggestions:
- Good communication among the players
- Game related movement by the players in the middle
- Precise passing
- Keep the ball on the ground
- Open body stands/position
- Switch the players in the middle regularly

.02 Basic Drill – endless
Setup: 8 – 10 players, 3 – 5 balls, 6 cones, field 10m x 20m
Sequence:
- A1 passes to M1 (1), who passes into the run of A2.
- A2 plays a through passes to M2 and runs to the goal line.
- M2 passes into the run of A1, who forwards the pass to M3.
- M3 passes to A2, who controls the ball and dribbles back to the starting position.
- A1 runs around the last cone and runs back to the start, too.
- There they switch positions.
- The next couple starts with the same passing sequence.

.03 Drill with opponents
Setup: 8 – 10 players, 3 balls, 6 cones, field 10m x 20m
Sequence:
- A1 passes to M1 (1), who is being pressured by a half active opponent and passes into the run of A2.
- A2 passes to M2 and runs towards the goal line.
- M2, also being pressured by a half active opponent, passes into the run of A1, who directly forwards the ball to M3.
- M3, also under pressure by a half active opponent, passes to A2, who controls the ball and dribbles back to the start.
- A1 runs around the last cone and also runs back to the start.
- There they switch positions.
- The next couple starts with the same passing sequence.
04 Passing exercise with overlapping
Setup: 8 – 10 players, 3 balls, 6 cones, field 10m x 20m
Sequence:
- A passes to M1 (1), who passes into the run of B, who switches his position with A (overlapping).
- B passes to M2, who passes into the run of A.
- Before this A and B cross, respectively A overlaps B.
- A passes to the next player at the goal line.
- B runs to the end of the next group.
- The next couple starts with the same passing sequence.

05 Drill with two Balls

Sequence:
- A1 and B1 simultaneously pass to M1 and M2 (1), who passes into the run of A2 and B2.
- A2 and B2 give through passes to M2 and M1 and run to the goal line.
- M2 and M1 play into the run of A1 and A2, who forwards the pass to the next player.
- The next couple starts with the same passing sequence.
.06 Basic form with 2 goalkeepers (1 ball)
Setup: 6 – 8 players, 2 goalkeepers, 1 ball, 6 cones, field 10m x 20m
Sequence:
- A1 passes to the first goalkeeper M1, who rolls the ball into the run of A2.
- A2 passes to the second goalkeeper M2 and runs towards the goal line.
- A1 and A2 run to the end of the other group.
- The next couple starts with the same passing sequence.
Tips and suggestions:
- a neutral player instead of the third goalkeeper
- Good communication among the players
- Precise passing
- Keep the ball on the ground
- Accelerate speed
.07 Exercise with 2 goalkeepers and 2 balls
Setup: 6 – 8 players, 2 goalkeepers, 2 balls, 6 cones, field 10m x 20m
Sequence:
- A1 and B1 pass to the first goalkeepers M1 and M2, who roll the ball into the run of A2 and B2.
- A2 and B2 pass through to the second goalkeeper M2 and M1 and run towards the finishing line.
- A1 and A2 run to the end of the other group.
- The next couple starts with the same passing sequence.
