How can players break past the last line of defense at just the right moment? And how can coaches systematically develop the skills needed for these critical situations?
This article dives into key technical and tactical principles for effective play on the offside line — with a focus on first touch, passing combinations, and coordinated movement off the ball.
The Foundation: Develop Technique Through Continuous Training Patterns
Before players can handle complex match situations, they need a solid technical base. Repetitive, continuous training patterns (endless forms) offer an efficient way to build these skills — especially in tight spaces near the offside line, where timing and precision are crucial.
Key Training Goals:
- A perfect first touch
- Safe passing combinations on the offside line (avoiding offside traps)
- Coordinated movement off the ball during:
- Third-man runs
- Overlaps
First Touch Makes the Difference
A clean and purposeful first touch is often the deciding factor when playing near the offside line. Instead of stopping the ball dead, players should take it on the move — ideally into open space and in the direction of play.
A quality first touch creates a time and movement advantage over defenders — often leading directly to a scoring chance.
Open Body Position – Keep the Field in View
An effective first touch is supported by proper body orientation. The open body position means the receiver is positioned sideways to the ball, allowing them to see both the passer and the opponent’s goal.
Unlike a closed body position (facing away from goal), this setup allows for a faster continuation of play.
“Third-Man Play” – Smart Passing
“The player who’s open to the field receives the ball.” That’s the principle behind the “wall pass with third-man run in between the lines” combination.
If the initial receiver is facing away from goal, they quickly lay the ball off to a teammate who is open to the field.
This type of third-man pass — a staple in Julian Nagelsmann’s training methodology — promotes fluid combinations and helps break through defensive lines.
Soccer Drill – Pass-Zig-Zag – Sharpen the First Touch

Setup:
Create a zig-zag course with cones, placing one player at each cone. At both starting positions, place at least three players each with a ball.
Execution:
- The first player makes a diagonal pass and follows their ball.
- The receiver opens up slightly, then takes the ball sideways with their first touch.
- They pass diagonally to the next cone and follow their pass.
- Once at the far end, players dribble back to the starting point.
- As soon as the first pass is made, the group on the opposite side begins the same sequence.
Coaching Tips:
- Time your movement away from the cone
- First touch must go in the direction of the next player
- Follow the pass immediately
- Always make eye contact before passing
This training exercise, combined with the key principles outlined above, helps players improve both technically and tactically when playing on the offside line — clear, effective, and easy to integrate into any session.
